Leftovers
Finally tonight: leftovers and why, in many ways, a meal and a message are
actually better the second day.
Millions of Christians went home from church Sunday, ideally after having
their spirits fed by a hearty message, to sit down and have their bodies fed
by a hearty meal. If both the message and the meal were truly good, then
hopefully there was too much of both for either to be consumed in one sitting.
A lot of meals just get better when you warm them up again . . . the meat is
more flavorful . . . the spices and seasonings in the sauces and gravies have had
a chance to set in and mingle. The memory of how good it was, combined with the
anticipation of how good it will be, wakes up the taste buds to experience
something they missed the day before.
For Christians, that Sunday message about the Lord Jesus Christ should also
be even better warmed up in the heart on the day after. The "meat" of the message
should be more flavorful in your mind. The implications of the impact of His life
upon yours have had a chance to set in and mingle with your thoughts. And in the
memory of the message, you might even experience something you missed the day
before.
Of course, meals and messages left too long get stale. You need to have
seconds while they're still fresh.
